I keep hoping mankind will give up on fairy tales...little chance of that!

Tonight I watched Rev. Franklin Graham and Bill O/Reilly discuss if Hell actually exists.  Now Bill believes it must exist or there would be no motive to behave morally, and Franklin believes that it does definitely exist and the only way to avoid it is to give your live to Jesus Christ....as he says, It's in the Bible!

I  watch their discussion with embarrassment for both of them and wonder how man can live in the modern age and promote the most unbelievable fairy tales and untruths.  Bill says he believes in Hell but surely the Jews from the Holocaust didn't go there....but the Rev. Graham dodges the thought and claims if you don't accept Jesus.....you are doomed to Hell.  And then says that the preacher who just announced that he believes in Heaven, but not Hell, is a heretic.  I watch to learn how out of touch most of us are today to reality and science.  It is not a pretty sight!

I think we are living in hell as long as we have to hear relatively informed people babble on about such nonsense! This is not a Democrat or Republican issue......it is a gullible issue!  Obama's personal savior is Jesus...what the hell is he thinking?  When will mankind quit making up the unbelievable and reaching for the supernatural gods?

My answer..10,000 gods later....Never!

Abby.

TUL,
You deserve a standing ovation.
Whilst I don't begrudge anyone their right to believe in a "god", I don't need "saving" just because I'm an athiest.
You get my vote. I empathise with your frustration.

The concept of an afterlife is an exercise in wish fulfillment from people afraid to die.

How about this for a reality replacement for hell.....those who have evolved to understand the freedoms and good things in life, will stand strong and hold accountable those who abuse the individual freedoms and the pursuit of happiness we have learned to cherish through the evolution of man and society?

There should be hell to pay on Earth if you abuse the freedoms of others as established by the Universal rights of mankind.

We do not need fairy tales and a supernatural hell to teach the world that it can evolve to a better place.

Texas is praying for rain while God is destroying the Midwest, East and South with tornadoes and violent rain storms. God has never pasted " Compassion 101!"

If there is a God....It needs to be held accountable for Its violence and eratic behavior!

If God were truly nonexistant, we would only have humankind to rely on for the opinion of goodness. To be absolutey honest, thats a scarier thought than that of hell itself. Would you truly rely on another human beings notions of morality? Or would you rather everyone pursue their own notions of good, and hope that everyone plays nice? I'm a sheep, whether it be of God's flock or some ranting robed man's. At least I'm honest about it.

Considering the absolute morality of the Bible endorses slavery, gender inequality, and the execution of adulterers, homosexuals, and "witches" I'm quite thankful for progressive rational based human morality.

Whether they like to admit it or not all religious people utilize some form of selective morality. Unless you're one of the kooks who "hears" God talking to you, then you're analyzing the teachings of different religions and making a conscious choice whether you agree with that moral system or not.

That is exactly where "morality" comes from. I consider anything that causes the suffering of another animal to be immoral. What gauge do you use??

It is the constant striving by man to overcome the wrongs caused by religious belief that keeps us form reaching a new and better level of existence.

Since the beggining of civilization men have created over 10,000 religions trying to find another that caters to their personal bias. Societies have been ever changing and evolving to correct the mistakes religions have piled on mankind while trying to ignore science and reason.

Morality evolves as we use our brains to find comfort, and our conscience to desire the same for others who do not steal away our natural freedoms.

Science and reason has religion running scared!

Religion's job is to promote fear of the truth........

Andrew, at no point do the scriptures implicitly state that the human male is inherantly superior to the human female. Gender roles are mentioned, but an overall inequality is only one of several implications. As for the endorsement of murder, i cant deny that there are indeed verses that do endorse such an act, but those verses are generally inconsistant with the overall theme in Christ's teaching (more specifically, his judgment in the case of the adulterous woman.) By definition, Christians prioritize the teachings of Christ in the bible over the earlier established laws. As for the fact that I am indeed selecting a particular morality, my point is that you are doing the same, and that calling my morality inferior is no less dogmatic than what I do.

kavique, Morality is only man-made under the pretense that there is no God, gathered up evidence that uses facts that were thought up in the faith of dead white european males. Sorry that everyones' thoughts on the nature fo the universe doesnt springboard of that. My personal morality is centered around what I believe to be the will of a being that I consider sovereign over all things. My morality considers the long-term fate of all people, which drives me to say the things I say, and do the things I do.

TryingUsingLogic, many wrongs have been done in the sake of religion, I'll agree with that, but science has no clean slate either. Not that long ago, science would have considered me a fundementally inferior subspecies. Science would brought a wealth of detriment to many a culture, just alongside religion. If science can be used for the better of mankind, so can religion. Both can be missaplied and misunderstood as well, and many people can suffer for it.

    Abby, what is it?

Your are missing a major point here. Science is the process of presenting data and adjusting the findings continuously to find the best answer. Religion is about maintaining worn out myths and untruths even when science clearly is finding better answers. When science is misapplied it is called out and challenged.....Religions are living in the Dark Ages and science is exploring the enlightenment of the future.

Surely, you can't seriously compare the two in any logical way?

      friendofdavid,

"morality" as we call it is a system of behavior that evolved with social animals. Chimpanzees have a similar basic morality to humans. Complex interactions in a group make it necessary to establish a "proper" mode of behavior. It serves the group as a whole.

My personal morality is centered around what I believe to be the will of a being that I consider sovereign over all things.

"Sovereign"??? WTF?? Why do you people WANT a king?? What the hell is wrong with humans that, if they aren't being ruled over they will actually INVENT a king?? Pathetic. I am no one's "subject". If you feel the need to grovel before your "sky daddy" go right ahead. But I'm embarrassed that someone of my species would demean themselves in such a way. A chimpanzee has more respect for itself.

Im getting the implication from you that If God were to exist, that he would immediately respond and repair every human woe, most of which are self inflicted. Part of my faith as a Christian is understanding that that the world as it is now is a broken place. Humnankind can always strive to make things better (we are actively encouraged to do so), but things will only be fundementally 'good' when God establishes his kingdom.

the world as it is now is a broken place.

The world is a complex place that is forever evolving. We do have good things happen when we stand strong on reason, responsibility and logic. Most people on earth keep passing the buck to one of 10,000 gods for happiness or supernatural salvation. Our lives are longer than ever because of medical science....not God. Our wars are continuing as always because totalitarians smothering all freedoms or theocracies enforcing radical beliefs. Gods are not saving us from wars and never will. If after every tornado, war and earthquake that has ever happened, all Christian churches worth left unscathed you might have 1ounce of data about God theories! Nothing like that ever happens and it is weak to put one's faith in God's Kingdom (Allah or Jesus).

There are those who would say we finally got Bin Laden because Jesus belief is stronger than the Muslim belief in Allah. That is simply silly! We sought and took down an evil person promoting an evil religious agenda in what we should hope becomes a more freeworld because of the efforts of an intelligent and compassionate mankind.

And if you then say you will still pray for me......it only makes the problem worse.....

I can say I hope for your enlightenment to the truths of the natural world!

So now your saying that no sort of enlightenment can happen in the world with religious people in it? So now your saying that if religious people exist, no science can continue, that the world must stay in some technological stasis? Since when was the entirety of scientific or medicinal research linked to the acceptence or nonacceptance of a singular theory? Why is your intolerance any better than the intolerance of religous folk?

There is a play by Euripides dealing our Apollonian and Dionysian natures. It is called The Baccante. A young man attempts to live with only reason/logic. When he meets his emotions, they tear him apart.

It is an old Greek ideal: Everything in moderation.

Why is your intolerance any better than the intolerance of religous folk?

My goal is to protect all freedom of belief...that is not being intolerant to religion.

Religions pinning everything on God (and condeming those who don't) is intolerance.

I admit I could be wrong about all my thoughts on the god subject. Religion will not allow you to admit to being wrong or you have denied your God! There is a big difference between the reason of a believer and a non-believer.

I do not condemn you for believing, but do hope you can take the supernatural blinders off and take a look at reality. Religions continue to deny facts that science has shot down! Another sign of intolerance.....or clinging to ignorance?

The actions of men do not prove or disapprove the existence of God. I believe in God, but not in some old man sitting on a throne. God, by definition, is beyond human understanding. It is possible He is only what Lincoln called "the better angles of our Nature." I do not claim a definition.

Men of God are men and too often men who confuse their glory with the glory of the god they claim to represent. They protect their institutions, institutions that forget the spirit of the faith they claim to represent.

I tend to believe in a gnosis. The battle is not between Good and Evil but between Knowledge and Ignorance. An enlightened individual will do Good because it is in his best interests to do so. But here you get into a Socratic argument, "What is virtue?"

If there is a God it is unknown to man and will not be defined by the silly screenplays men have written! There is no knowledgeable evidence of any gods.....just ignorant superstition or denial by otherewise well informed people.
