Is God really in control?

Was God so busy helping Obama take out Bin Laden that He forgot to turn the rain spigot off in the mid-west (causing Biblical style floods) and turn it on in Texas where they desperately need, and have been praying for rain?   God does work in mysterious ways.....or maybe... He doesn't work at all!

How about all the children dying of disease and starvation in countries that are pounded by missionaries handing out the Bible with thier blessing that God will help them?  No wonder Mother Theresa lost her faith in Jesus!

Haiti has the most missionaries of any helpless country with the worst possible outcome to their presence.  If God could just make the slightest since to those of us who see through the facades of powerful man made religions.

I hope for a better day for mankind......through enlightenment and reason.

I like to think of JFK's take on this: "Here on Earth, God's work must truly be our own." No, I don't believe that God controls everything. There is no way that a loving God could allow the pain and suffering that happens every day. So, He has to stand off and let things happen as they will happen (or, people cause them to happen) until the day when it all goes away.

That seems to be just an opinion because it is not what most Christians teach or believe. The entire reason for prayer is to receive God's blessings in life.

With any tragic event that happens, all the Christians in the media ask for everyone's prayers....with the obvious suggestion that God can help?

It's like, I didn't fall down and break my hip today....istn't God great! Then tommorow when I have cancer....isn't God mysterious or out to lunch?

It is time for more simple reason and common sense about gods.

    Grisham

Some of these problems we can fix ourselves but it's our own greedy nature that prevents us from doing so. There was a great article the other day about how we throw away 1 billion tons of food a year.

Wouldn't that food do a lot of good to those starving people?

I see your point though, TUL. I think humanity just has to strive to help itself.

Its not an opinion, TUL, its a faith. I don't believe in predetermination or other teachings where God is in control of everything. Beyond that point, I am proselytizing, so I won't go there. I have circumstantial, personal, evidence where God intervened to grant a prayer, but it is still circumstantial and those who do not share my faith will believe it; so, I can't go there either. I think that Grisham is right, we must, and should, help each other; though, not by abandoning faith but understanding that it does not come in a one size fits all package.

Another possible scenario is that all the gods men believe in actually do exist and they all are very busy arm wrestling and socializing in some supernatural country club.

They are just too busy being irresponsible to care about us earthlings. It must be time consuming to maintain a "God Power" over another God?

Make up what ever scenario you like best and call it a religion! Anything is possible...right!

An opinion that is not justifiable is no different than a faith that can't be justified.

Explain to me the difference please........

you wish a logical answer to this problem. i am a man of faith. i believed the miracles of jesus christ, but when you read them ask this question did he solve this problem then during his stay or what was the miracle a foregleam of? remember the persons that he resurrected, Jarius's daughter and his friend Lazarus. they eventually died again, but as King of the kingdom that he was preaching about, he was telling people about better days, days that the prophets had spoken about prior to his arrival. days that will come because the Bible assures us that the day will come when there will be plenty(Psalms 72:16). But to your comment of how? Jesus spoke of a 'kingdom', people want to say its a feeling, a heart condition, but its a government and Jesus Christ is the King of that Kingdom that people pray for to come at Matthew 6:9 God's word assures us the poor will not be forgotten(Psa. 9:18) World leaders say poor countries need a "benevolent dictator", someone with power to act and kindness to care. A ruler who could end poverty for ALL would have to be a world ruler because extreme poverty is often the result of international inequality. The ruler who could end poverty would have to be able to do something about our selfish human nature. Is God busy? Yes. From Genesis 3:15 God has been planning to return mankind to the original situation we had at first, perfection and eternal life. But we keep stumbling over ourselves. So God sent Jesus with good news for the poor (Lu.4:16-18) The various miracles were such foregleams of his powers, his authority that he will wield during his Kingdom reign. He will raise the dead, cure the sick, control the weather, feed the hungry. The Bible says he would have such authority (Dan.7:14; Matt. 28:18)He acted with compassion, one characteristic of the ruler was one who cared, Jesus fits the bill. Throughout his earthly ministry, Jesus acted with compassion for poor people. Jesus' teachings have the power to change people's heart so that they too can act compassionately. The tendency of humans to act selfishly is a universally acknowledged fact. The Bible calls it sin. The Apostle Paul referred to how God, through Jesus, would rescue true worshippers from inherited sinful tendencies, one of which is selfishness, the root cause of poverty(Rom. 7:21-25). Soon the earth will be filled with people who have been set free from inherited sin, including the tendencies to seek their own interests. (Isa. 11:9) The words of the prophet Micah contemplate a time when all will have what they need. (Micah4:4)

            frenchjr56.....

There is zero evidence that the Bible, Koran, Book of Mormon....etc, are the words of any God.

Your comment means nothing to rational critical thinkers.

I am an Agnostic. I don't see any evidence that anyone knows if gods exist or not. There is substantial evidence that men have created the existing gods and religions out of fear of the unknown. Science is by far the only believable source of facts pertaining to our our existence and Darwin's Theory of Evolution not only explains our past development but is the entire basis of research that continues to find cures and extend our lives. It is obvious to me that mankind has evolved to recognize the values that improve our lives and "Gods" are inactive in preventing the bad behaviors we are capable of.

The premise of all religions are childish and impotent when looking at the wonderful complexites of our universe. No one is better than man at selling scams about the known and unknown.

After thousands of years of religions praying to gods, the only thing that has significantly improved lives are the actions of mankind through science to learn from our mistakes and gain reason and knowledge.

I do not believe in fairy tales.

If someone can present any firm evidence of supernatural gods outside of using the "faith scam" as proof, I would listen with great expectation. That is much more open minded that faiths claiming they can't be wrong!

There are 10,000 religions because not one of them can offer a provable fact about their chosen God's power.

That is about as short as I can tell it......
